Jenni Milne, Silk Paintings from Cornwall

Born in Birmingham, Jenni Milne gained a degree in Fashion/Textiles and Art History at Birmingham's Collage of Art and then went on to take her Art Teaching Diploma at Birmingham University. In 1969 Jenni was fortunate enough to gain a teaching post in Cornwall at the Redruth School of Art, now part of Falmouth School of Art.

Having moved to Cornwall to pursue her teaching career Jenni and her family acquired a dilapidated cottage in Padstow, which they lovingly converted to become their family home. (The celebrity chef Rick Stein now owns the property.)

Life was to change dramatically with the arrival of her two son's in 1974/76; and the teaching career was now put on hold. Jenni, however, still had the need to be creative and in order to fulfil this need she designed toys at home. Having had the toy designs accepted by the Design Centre, both in London and Scotland, the toys were sent far and wide, a large number of them going to Canada.

With her two son's, Simon and Luke, now away from home, and with Cornwall having fed the soul, Jenni concentrated on Silk Painting and acquired her first studio at a craft centre just outside Wadebridge, sadly no longer there. It was at this time that Jenni began to teach Silk Painting as well as exporting her silk cards to Japan, Saudi, and Europe. Larger Silk Paintings were exhibited throughout the South West and many are now in private collections including the Japanese Embassy and the Otter Trust.

Now with Jenni's love of Cornwall, it's beautiful coastline, seascape, countryside and moorland and amazing changes of mood, combined with her skill and knowledge of many silk painting techniques, she produces a broad variety of works many capturing the very essence of Cornwall. Not only does she explore the variety of inks, and paints that are available, but also when she combines her painting with machine embroidery and exotic threads, the end result is stunning.

The Devore she creates with embellishments brings very lush textural results. It was because of Jenni's use of so many silk painting techniques, from basic silk painting to creating Devore that she was commissioned to write 'Silk Painting' published by Crowood Press. The book 'Silk Painting' has been extremely well received with many wonderful comments from The Guild of Silk Painters, Arty's (suppliers of all manner of fabulous silk), and George Weil (suppliers of silk painting materials).
